Indications are that initial sales of Windows 8 are dismal. The question now facing Redmond is whether to stick with this radical re-imagining of its veritable OS or revert to the familiar Windows environment of old. Microsoft hasn't released official sales numbers for Windows 8 or related products, like Surface RT, which hit stores in late October. But evidence is building from numerous sources that consumer response to the new products can be summed up as: "Meh." Salesforce.com Revenues Surge, But Should You Ignore Losses? By Doug Henschen Salesforce.com reported yet another quarter of double-digit revenue growth last week, but financial analysts didn't seem to blink about the losses it reported. In fact, most prominent cloud application vendors do report losses, at least as measured by generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). So why do they appear to play by different rules than their on-premises counterparts? What GE's $15 Trillion Industrial Internet Needs By Chris Murphy General Electric predicts that the "industrial Internet" could add $10 trillion to $15 trillion to the world economy in the next 20 years. Indeed, $15 trillion is a "wow, that's big" number, but it's not the most important part of GE's major new report on its industrial Internet vision. The most important part--beyond the marketing value--is that GE needs a whole lot of help from other vendors, regulators, financiers, and users of technology before this vision and its $15 trillion payoff can come true. This report looks like an attempt to rally an ecosystem. | JOIN THE CONVERSATION Posted By Dillon: "I'm not in total agreement with this article. Yes, there are two different ways of doing things in each version. But everyone already knows the "classic" way, and learning the new way (with the option to use the classic way while learning) isn't as difficult as everyone having to learn Android (which changes slightly in every version released) or iPad. The real problem is they jumped into the game too late against Android and iPad, and now that people are more attracted to those two because of their apps, "coolness," and ease of use, they're having a harder time competing." At the same time, they seek to communicate and work with others within the context of work processes supported by their organizations' back-end systems, including those used to manage content.
In this InformationWeek Webcast, Larry Hawes, principal at Dow Brook Advisory Services, will make the case for digital environments that provide the data and content, as well as the communication and collaboration tools, needed to perform specific tasks, while shielding most workers from the complexity associated with the capture and management of legal business records.
