Microsoft made three important announcements about its SQL Server database business last week, and the headliner was clearly "Hekaton," a beta project that promises to bring in-memory OLTP (transactional) processing to the next major release. Hekaton is Microsoft's in-memory answer to both SAP Hana and Oracle Database with its Exa options. In the other two announcements, the company released Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and, in the most big-data-relevant news, it set the next release of SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) for the first half of 2013.

PDW not only moves up from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012, it gains a new feature called PolyBase that supports federated querying against the database as well as Microsoft's just-released Hadoop platform, Microsoft HDInsight Server for Windows. This is an advance over competitors like Oracle, SAP and many others who force you to move data sets off Hadoop and into their databases to do analysis. PolyBase is based on Hive, so it won't be fast, but it's a step in the right direction.
