Amazon Posts First Loss In Almost A Decade Despite Strong Sales

The world’s largest online retailer, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), posted a loss of $274 million in the July-September period, earnings for which were released on October 25th. That’s down from earnings of $63 million, a year earlier. Though expected, it was Amazon’s first loss since July 2003. Revenues, however grew 27 percent to $13.81 billion, from $10.88 billion. The company attributed the loss to its investments in LivingSocial, its Kindle e-reader and the tablet business as well as in geographic locations such as China and in video content. Amazon competes in the e-commerce and e-content space with companies such as eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) and Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX). read more »
