Big Data Analytics Masters Degrees: 20 Top Programs

It's well documented that there's a business analytics talent gap, but what's being done about it? It's clear that this gap will be a long-term problem. But many businesses just can't wait the three to five years it might take today's undergrads to become business-savvy professionals.

With that and InformationWeek's readership in mind, there's a great opportunity for experienced information management professionals and even data-savvy IT generalists to fill the talent void. Thus, here's our short list of one- and two-year business analytics and big-data-oriented masters programs in North America.

These one-year and two-year graduate programs are geared to candidates who already have undergraduate degrees, and most favor professionals with three or more years of work experience. "Microsoft is not like HP, or IBM. The same "solution" does not apply. MS has been a software company and still is a first priority, but they are working to become more of a complete solution provider (software, hardware, consumer and business, etc.) like Apple is on the consumer front. Big difference is MS is the primary business solution provider, which in some cases will require two different software approaches. This all takes time. Consumers have no patience, and for the most part ignore security issues; they are a different breed and market than the world I work in. It seems many tech writers fit the consumer hat much better than the professional/business hat."

Research: Outlook 2013
Two-thirds of projects planned for 2013, such as network infrastructure, security, and storage, are decidedly IT-centric. About a fourth aren't focused on IT-centric efficiencies but are still internally focused, projects such as ERP and data quality. The remaining 11 percent of projects focus on customers--building IT-led products, creating mobile apps for customers, and improving big data programs, for instance.

For all the talk about IT pros being customer-centric--that is, getting out of the cubicle and being the true innovators within the company--for the most part they're not. Infrastructure, security, and storage improvements are indeed important, but their importance is dwarfed by technology trends happening outside the IT department.
