Twitter Acquires Mobile App Software Startup Crashlytics

Twitter has acquired Crashlytics, the company announced Monday, a crash reporting service that mobile apps use to gather data on software bugs. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Though Twitter has acquired the small startup outright, the team will continue to run its bug reporting software service for outside companies. It's worth noting that this is the second company Twitter has acquired that will continue offering services post-acquisition. (The first, of course, being Vine.) read more »

iOS 6.1 wasn't Apple's only software release on Monday. Issued alongside it was some new software for the company's beloved hobby, Apple TV. A relatively minor update to the Apple TV system software, 5.2 does add a couple new features to the device: Support for Bluetooth keyboards and AirPlay audio for videos, and the "Up Next" content queuing feature that debuted in iTunes 11. read more »

Intuit Confirms Purchase of Payvment After Shutting Down Its Commerce Platform

Payvment announced it was shutting down its Facebook commerce platform last night and handing over its customers to Ecwid, and today Intuit confirmed it is acquiring at least some of its employees. In a statement, the financial software provider said: "Intuit has acquired a team of highly skilled developers who will be of great value to the social teams at Intuit." No other terms of the deal were disclosed. Meanwhile, Payvment's social commerce platform and companion shopping site, Lish.com, will close as of March 1. read more »

Not more than a handful of days after Twitter launched its Vine video-sharing app, Facebook updated its main iOS application on Monday, adding the ability to capture and add video from inside the app. While the timing is curious, it's still a relatively incremental update; the Facebook Messenger app received voice message capabilities earlier this month, a feature that has also been added to the main Facebook app as of Monday. read more »

Etsy said today that its online marketplace sales grew 70 percent to $895 million in 2012, with total membership nearly doubling to 22 million. Twitter Competitor App.net Launches File-Hosting Feature

App.net, the paid social website that aims to take on Twitter, released its file application programming interface on Monday, allowing users of the service to host up to 10 gigabytes of file storage on their App.net account. Users can host files like photos or videos without "siloing" them in a particular service (i.e. Facebook), making for better portability of data among services. read more »
