All too many fail, with disparate systems and data being the usual culprits in failed attempts to gain a consolidated customer view.
Developing an integrated customer view has been on the wish list at insurance giant MetLife for at least 10 years, but it recently took a fresh approach to the challenge by choosing a NoSQL database as the platform for bringing together data from more than 70 separate administrative systems, claims systems, and other data sources. It moved from pilot to roll out in 90 days--breakneck speed in an industry used to measuring IT projects in months and years.
The choice of NoSQL for the project makes sense because these databases can ingest structured, semi-structured, and unstructured information without requiring tedious, expensive, and time-consuming database-mapping or extract, transform and load (ETL) processes to normalize all data to a rigid schema, as required by relational databases.

Research: 2013 BI/Analytics Salary Survey
Companies know that advanced analytics can give them a competitive advantage, but how do they get there? With 44 percent of staffers in our salary survey saying one of their top duties is "designing and revising reports" and just 12 percent of managers and 10 percent of staff focusing on tasks that can help predict performance, it appears there's still a long road ahead.
Our InformationWeek 2013 U.S. IT Salary Survey reveals that business intelligence/analytics and data integration/data warehousing salaries are slowly but steadily climbing, according to 806 respondents in these categories. The median total compensation for managers in these categories is $130,000.
