Sharp Retires Early Retirement Plan Early

Sharp's early retirement plan was supposed to run from November 1 to November 14. But the struggling Japanese company was forced to cut it short when it was overwhelmed by volunteers. Sharp said Tuesday it curtailed its early retirement program a week into its two-week run after receiving nearly 3,000 applications -- 1,000 more than it had expected. The company will book a $311 million one-time charge this quarter to eliminate those jobs. read more »



Philips' Hue "iLighting" System Won't Ship for Three to Four Months

There goes that holiday gift idea. Hue, the new Wi-Fi-controlled, multi-colored lighting system from Philips that's available exclusively through Apple, won't ship for three to four months to consumers who order the kit through Apple.com. Philips said in a statement that there has been "an unprecedented global demand for Philips Hue" and that the company has had to increase production capacity. Kits are available at local Apple stores -- while they're still in stock. read more »

Microsoft Announces New VP of International Research

Microsoft announced on Tuesday that the company has hired Jeannette Wing to lead Microsoft Research International, the company's applied computing research arm, spanning 13 offices globally with more than 850 PhD researchers in the organization. Previously, Wing did a four-year stint as the assistant director of research for the National Science Foundation, and headed the computer science department at Carnegie Mellon University. Wing will join Microsoft at the beginning of the year, heading up oversight for the company's labs in southeast Asia and England. read more »

Storify Gets a Face-Lift

The new look comes almost exactly one year after the site last refreshed its user interface. Luo was formerly Facebook's global head of small and medium business marketing. Before joining Facebook, Luo led acquisition marketing at Google for their AdWords product across all of Asia-Pacific.
