Rough week for former CIA Director Petraeus, huh?

I love this snippet from contributor Matt Schwartz's recent article about the scandal:

"Want to avoid a fall from grace? Then ensure you're not the chief of a spy agency who coordinates your extramarital affairs using a free webmail service."

Now to be fair, Petraeus and his girlfriend weren't actually emailing each other. They set up a dummy account, and then would take turns logging in, writing an email and saving it as a draft and then logging out. Then the other person would log in, read the draft and then write up one of their own.

Still, the case is a painful reminder that privacy isn't assured in a free, Web-based email service. Now you may be sitting there thinking "Well...duh," but with over 423 million Gmail users out there that can't all be cookie recipes swaps and Facebook friend invites.

Now for those of us in the States, this Thursday is Thanksgiving. But for many, this holiday is going to be a hard one to celebrate.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Having helped a good friend throw away just about every one of his personal belongings -- and watching his neighbors do the same from their ravaged houses -- I can assure you these folks still need help. So please, if you can afford to, consider making a donation to the Red Cross' relief efforts at http://www.redcross.org/hurricane-sandy.

We're taking off next weekend, so we'll see you December 1st!
