Big data proponents are a vocal bunch, promoting sundry tools and technologies that enable enterprises to mine a steady stream of unstructured data for hard-to-reach insights. But how easy are big data projects to set up? And once implemented, are they worth the cost?
As Jeff Bertolucci reports, a recent survey by IDG Research Services and Kapow Software shows a fair amount of disillusionment among big data pioneers. The survey of more than 200 IT and business leaders at large organizations shows that just 23 percent of these leaders see big data projects as a "success" thus far, while 52 percent of respondents call the projects "somewhat successful."
As we've previously advised, organizations should identify problems they want to solve before they blindly rush into big data deployments. In fact, the biggest payoff is likely to be in solving problems that existed long before big data became a buzzword. Addressing known needs is a surer path to success than just gathering up data and hoping to find golden nuggets down the road.

JOIN THE CONVERSATION Posted By Tony Kontzer: "The most exciting thing about the Internet of Things is the promise of devices to broadcast their various indicators (location, operational levels, mechanical status, physical condition, etc.) via social media feeds. This is the vision of companies like GE, which wants to establish social networks around things like jet engines, which customers, designers, engineers, and anyone with a vested interest can then 'follow.'"
