CFOs Join CMOs In Tech Power Grab

Chief financial officers' level of influence over technology decisions has increased over the last three years. This is the key finding of a just-released study, and it's a familiar trend, as the same thing is said to be happening with chief marketing officers.

Some CIOs might view increasing CFO and CMO influence over tech decisions as a threat. But executives at Oracle and Accenture, the co-sponsors of the CFO study, urge CIOs to view the trend as an opportunity to educate and cooperate with C-level peers.

"There's a lot of new technology that these executives need to be aware of, so the onus is on the CIO to educate them on the return on investments in things like cloud, big data, and analytics," said Scott Brennan, global managing director of Accenture's Finance & Enterprise Performance unit. "The CIO may have to become as much an influencer as a decision-maker."

Is Data Quality Overrated?
By Rajan Chandras
Am I being a heretic here? IT professionals swear by the mantra of data quality. Business is forever hand-wringing over it and willing to invest in a multi-million-dollar initiative to improve data quality. Vendors have made--and are still making--a killing selling data quality tools. The challenge of gaining and maintaining enterprise data quality has given rise to a whole new discipline, which some call data governance (DG). So what madness has come upon me that I seek to storm this formidable fortress?

Windows Phone 8 'Gets' Business Needs
By Mark Kaplan
Let's face facts: It's cumbersome to do some business tasks on an iPhone. I'm not talking about basic or "consumerized" functions, like email or conferencing on FaceTime. I'm talking about a browser that renders pages correctly so users can access customized Web apps and the ability to join voice and video meetings. Here's why companies that provide smartphones to employees should give Windows Phone 8 a look.

Windows 8.1 Timing All Wrong
By Mike Feibus
It is going to be very difficult for Microsoft to succeed with Windows 8.1, and that has little to do with whether the official build will include a Start button or boot-to-desktop option. Rather, it's because Microsoft picked a terrible time to release the upcoming follow-on to Windows 8.

As IQs Fall, Can Gamification Help?
By John Barnes
Recent studies of standardized testing might lead one to conclude that the gamification of educational evaluation might be the best thing about the IT revolution. Scientists and educators have long been puzzled by the steady worldwide rise of about three points per decade in average IQ, first discovered by James Flynn and commonly called the Flynn Effect. Flynn himself has since found the effect to be reversing, beginning in the early 1990s. A century of people growing smarter seems to be ending.

"Totally disagree. With as badly as Microsoft has screwed the pooch on this one, there is not much time to make amends with consumers and OEMs alike. Never mind the corporations, who didn't even give Windows 8 the time of day in the first place!

"They had better hope for a win with the Haswell wave of product, and to achieve that they need a hierarchical start MENU and not just their crackpot start screen. How embarrassing is it to have the majority of your users rely on third-party products just for base usability of your OS?"
