Accenture's 7 Tech Trends Driving Digital Business

Accenture's just-published 2013 Technology Vision sports the theme "Every business is a digital business." I talked with Accenture CTO Paul Daugherty about the seven tech trends the consulting firm sees making digital business an executive priority. The list includes relationships at scale, designing for analytics, data velocity, seamless collaboration, software-defined networking, "active" defense, and cloud computing. Here's more on each item on the list, plus some of my thoughts and examples.

4 Signs That Microsoft Finally Gets It
By Mike Feibus
Last year unfolded like a business-school case study for "Shooting Yourself in the Foot 101" for Microsoft. Really, if Microsoft had contracted Google and Apple to sketch out the Windows 8 rollout, the plan probably wouldn't have looked much different. I bring this up not to pile on, but to point out some encouraging signs that Microsoft may comprehend the situation it's gotten itself into and is taking steps to right the ship.

Microsoft Gains Enterprise Clout With ERP, CRM
By Doug Henschen
A decade ago Microsoft was dominant in consumer computing and it was building up credibility in the enterprise market. Now it seems Microsoft's biggest strength is in the enterprise market while its sway over consumers is waning. Fresh evidence of Microsoft's enterprise strength was on display at this week's Convergence Conference in New Orleans, where more than 11,000 gathered to hear about the latest on Dynamics CRM and Dynamics ERP.

Unpatched Remote Access Tools: Your Gift To Attackers
By Mathew J. Schwartz
Help desk teams love remote-control software. When employees call with computer problems, the IT department can remotely take control of the user's machine, copy over files, and set all application and operating system wrongs to right. Unfortunately, they're not the only group interested in putting TeamViewer, Symantec PCAnywhere, UltraVNC, or other remote access software to work. Attackers love the software, too, because it allows them to avoid sneaking complex Trojan malware onto a targeted PC.

Oracle's Bad Quarter Is Self-Inflicted
By Doug Henschen
There has been a lot of speculation in the media about the bigger-picture meaning behind the poor financial results Oracle announced Wednesday for its third quarter ended in February. The question is this: Is this something that's happening to Oracle, caused by changes in the industry that will impact other tech firms, or is this something that Oracle is doing to itself, in which case only Oracle will suffer?

"Well said. The messaging around Windows 8 has indeed been tragic. If these other moves are accompanied by a renewed marketing effort around the project blue upgrade, then things could certainly turn around. Especially if they are also accompanied by a round of well-priced, Haswell-toting tablets and hybrids."
