AAPL: Disney Showcases Apple's iWatch Potential

Disney Showcases Apple's iWatch Potential
by Jason Schwarz

On March 5th Appleinsider published what we consider to be one of the most important Apple (AAPL) pieces of the year. It reveals that Disney's (DIS) Magic Kingdom in Orlando, FL, has done away with turnstiles at the park's entrance as visitors are now greeted by workers holding iPod touches. This change is part of a larger initiative to create an entirely new payment platform within the resort. Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts announced that the company plans to provide customer wrist bands called 'MagicBands' that will act as a visitor's hotel key, pass card, and credit card. Along with the adoption of iPods, Disney is incorporating other elements of iOS that will enable Fastpass ride ticketing, maps, information on ride wait times, and the ability to view menus and book dining reservations. With the implementation of MagicBands, the era of the wallet is one step closer to extinction. read more »

GOOG: Google Needs The Swagger Of A Boss

Google Needs The Swagger Of A Boss
by Benedict Tubuo (Beevest)

There has been some talk lately that Google (GOOG) should be scared of Samsung. There was actually a comment on Seeking Alpha that described the relationship akin to holding a tiger by the tail. These opinions reminded me of a line that I cannot accurately cite but don't want to claim as mine. It says something like- "if you owe a bank $10M you owe the bank, but if you owe the bank $100M, you own the bank". Apparently, everybody owes Google $10M but Samsung owes Google $100M. How is that for logic? Samsung is a chaebol because it has done tremendously well by itself and is a much bigger entity than meets the eye. It owes a lot of its success in smartphones, tablets and smart TV's to Google. You could also argue this inversely but let's at least agree the relationship has worked well for both sides. So what's lurking in the shadows that should make Google to be scared of Samsung? I contend that Google has been too focused on "Search'" and not been assertive enough in controlling its burgeoning ecosystem. This over reliance on search has made Google very docile and vulnerable to disruption. If Google wants to take full advantage of its potential it needs to become more of a boss and find ways to start taking prisoners. read more »

Investing In Apple: Risk Management 101
by NYC Trader

In recent weeks, while investors appeared to be piling out of Apple (AAPL), I have seen many articles with suggestions on how Tim Cook should run his company. While I consider myself a savvy investor from the standpoint of uncovering value using models, trends, and comparisons, by no means am I a skilled enough technology expert to be able to instruct the CEO of Apple, its sophisticated employees, its financial experts, and its impressive board on how to run Apple simply because the share price refuses to go up in the near-term. read more »

2:24 PM "We are going to build our strategy on selling less storage and delivering more value. We'll make a storage consolidation play," says new IBM storage chief Ambuj Goyal. Central to this strategy is 2012 acquisition Butterfly Software, whose storage analysis/migration tools cut down on usage. IBM is also placing a big emphasis on controllers that allow consolidation projects and flash storage installations to happen without apps noticing. IBM's storage hardware ops have been bleeding share, and saw a 5% Y/Y sales drop in Q4. But storage software saw double-digit growth. Read comments

2:03 PM eBay (EBAY -2.7%) shuts down Instant Sale, a service that lets users trade in electronics the company then resells with the help of a third party. An eBay spokesperson suggests the company's experiments with new resale options, together with a focus on offering "simpler, easier selling experiences," were responsible. Instant Sale had produced ~4M offers since its 2011 launch. (earlier) Read comments
